Abstract

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using nontoxic photosensitizing dyes, e.g., hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD), in combination with a laser-exciting system is being developed for treatment of a variety of cancers.1 It is becoming clear that the irradiating condition of laser light and the dose of photosensitizing dye are inherently important for achieving significant and selective tumor necrosis. Moreover, studies on the dye properties inside the cancerous cell and the search and development of new potential dyes for the PDT are strongly required.
