Abstract

The conventional means for pumping the upper laser level of the HgBr BX laser at 502 nm is to dissociate (electrically or optically) the parent molecule HgBr2, that is, HgBr2+e(orω)HgBr2*(B2Σ)+Br. Since this laser process requires an ~6-eV photon or electron, the overall quantum efficiency for excitation of the laser in this way is ~40 %.
