Abstract

GaAs lasers are generally limited to output powers of a few tens of milliwatts due to catastrophic facet damage which occurs at high power levels. We have developed a holographic method of laser beam addition capable of producing large optical powers from the coherent sum of many modular laser sources. The coherent addition of six GaAlAs lasers from a monolithic array has been demonstrated. This method is applicable to a wide variety of laser types and is readily extendable to 2-D arrays of lasers.
