Abstract
β″-Al2O3 exhibits several unique properties such as easy postgrowth doping with a variety of rare earth and transition metal ions. It accepts higher concentrations of dopant ions than stoichiometric materials without exhibiting concentration quenching. Recently, laser action1 and resonant four-wave mixing2 were observed in Nd-doped β"-Al2O3 platelets. Hence there is considerable interest in establishing the saturation behavior and practical limits to dopant concentration in this interesting material.
