Abstract

Beta-barium borate (β-BaB2O4) is a new nonlinear optical crystal1 which possesses many excellent properties for nonlinear frequency conversion in a spectral range that extends from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. This material is highly transparent from 190 to 3500 nm, and its large birefringence and low dispersion allow phase matching for second harmonic generation (SHG) of fundamental wavelengths between 400 and 3000 nm. The effective second harmonic coefficient for a 1.06-μm fundamental is 6 times larger than that of potassium dideuterium phosphate (KD*P). The damage threshold of β-BaB2O4 is 4.6 GW/cm2 for 1.06-μm and 7 GW/cm2 for 0.53-μm, 10-ns pulses, β- BaB204 is being grown in 1.4-cm thick plates which can be fabricated into 9-mm thick, 1.4-cm clear aperture crystals oriented at the phase matching angle for SHG. The optical quality of the crystals is very good.
