Abstract
We present here the first observation of phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in GdAI03Cr+3 using an argon laser. A detailed study of the phenomena was also performed with ruby. The phase-conjugation efficiency Is ~5 times larger with GdAI03Cr+3 than with ruby (for the same L). We have measured the real part of the nonlinear index of refraction n2 In both samples with a novel differential interferometric technique,1 The results show that the real part of n2 is an order of magnitude larger than the imaginary part in both crystals. The phase-conjugation efficiency is in good agreement with the contribution due to the real part of n2 assuming a dispersive grating. The results presented here clarify the dispersive origin of the phase conjugation in these samples. This conclusion contradicts the previous assumption1 2 of an absorptive grating mechanism due to lack of knowledge of the real part of n2. Presently, phase conjugation and the measurement of n2 are being studied in alexandrite and SrAIFs:Cr+3. (Poster paper)
