Abstract
A number of authors have studied the random image motion that results when a laser-illuminated object is observed through atmospheric turbulence.1–4 These studies have assumed either plane wave or spherical wave illumination. Target geometries have been limited to plane reflectors, right-angle prisms, and retroreflectors. One of the more interesting results of this work is the prediction that the variance of the image jitter of a plane reflector with collimated illumination will be 4 times the variance that would be observed in the image of the illumination at the target.
