Abstract
The performance requirements for planned sensor data processing facilities and supercomputers are shown in Table 1, These requirements are primarily driven by Government systems such as the recently implemented NASA Data Base Management System at Huntsville which includes a 100 Mblt/s fiber-optic bus and an optical disk Jukebox recorder that provides access to 1013 bits on 125 disks in under 7 s. As an example of evolving requirements, the data transfer rate of the White Sands/NASA ground terminal storage system is expected to grow from 85 Mbit/s to 1600 Mbit/s by the late 1990s as additional tracking and data relay satellite channels become operational. The supercomputer requirements have been projected by NASA1 and by supercomputer developers (Seventh IEEE Symposium on Mass Storage Systems).
