Abstract

A new color center laser has been developed in additively colored NaCl doped with 100 ppm OH. This laser displays stable cw operation and tunes smoothly from 1.41 to 1.77 μm when pumped by a cw Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 μm. To date, cw output powers of 1.1 W at 1.6 μm have been obtained for pump powers of 8.5 W. In a synchronously pumped mode-locked arrangement, pulses of 5 ps duration have been generated tunable from 1.5 to 1.7 μm, with average power of 450 mW at 1.6 μm.
