Abstract
Wayne Lo was an outstanding, personable scientist who will be remembered scientifically for his pioneering research in tunable diode laser technology. He was generous in sharing knowledge of his work and was widely recognized as a leader in this important area of research. His technical accomplishments included developing structures and processes to make these diodes more reliable. He was the first to build tunable diode lasers with a graded carrier concentration which improved both their efficiency and optical properties. Under his leadership the application of molecular beam epitaxy to growth of laser structures has produced lasers that operate near room temperature. This is a significant accomplishment considering that these lasers originally operated near liquid helium temperature. Lo’s contribution to tunable diode laser research should always be remembered since he brought these devices to the threshold of important contributions to science and technology.
