Abstract

Nd:YAG lasers have historically been pumped by flashlamps. Lifetime limitations of flashiamps have driven us in the space-laser community toward development of diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers. Pumping by laser diodes first became practical with development of the GaAlAs double-heterostructure laser diode, which was capable of running cw at the optimum pump wavelength of 808 nm. Laser-diode pumps with efficiency of 20% or higher can be built with devices presently available.
