Abstract

If the difference frequency of two collinear laser pulses propagating synchronously in a plasma is resonant with the plasma frequency, large-amplitude Langmuir or beat waves will be generated. The electric field of such waves is longitudinal produced by the coupling of the motion of laser-accelerated plasma electrons with the magnetic waves. The acceleration of charged particles to relativistic energies by these fields is a possible candidate for a new generation of particle accelerators for high-energy particle physics experiments.1
