Abstract
The absorption spectrum of Xe2Cl is of both practical and theoretical interest. Stimulated emission has been obtained from the molecule under electron-beam excitation, but the red shift of the laser spectrum with respect to the molecule’s spontaneous emission peak strongly suggests the presence of absorbers in the medium. Furthermore, since the lowest excited states of the rare gas halide trimers are ionic in nature (that is,) and since theoretical considerations suggest that the perturbation of the core by Cl− is weak, the absorption spectrum of excited Xe2Cl is expected to be very similar to that for the ion.
