Abstract

A coiled single-mode fiber has been used as an optical component in an optical fiber sensing system such as a fiber-optic gyroscope.1 In various applications of the coiled fiber, it is necessary to evaluate modal birefringence and polarization dispersion introduced by bending2 for design and performance evaluation of coiled fiber devices.1 In this paper, dependence of modal birefringence and the modal dispersion on bending curvature is clarified experimentally. It is also shown that the coiled fiber can be used as a light amplifier based on a four-photon mixing process3 with a wide frequency tunability for signal light.
