Abstract
Picosecond IR pulses can be amplified1,2 to the intensity level of 1012 W/cm2 by ultrashort pulse injection in a high-pressure TEA CO2 laser oscillator. The measurements of Corkum1,2 have also established that the temporal shape of the amplified pulse evolves into a train of picosecond pulses. Using a linear transfer function to describe the amplification process, pulse reshaping is shown to originate from the coherent excitation of the rotational levels of a vibrational band.
