Abstract

Single-frequency semiconductor lasers are of current interest because of their potential application in 1.55-μm optical communication systems. One factor governing the performance of an optical communication system is the receiver sensitivity for a given bit error rate (BER). Several noise mechanisms participate in determining the receiver sensitivity. Two among them, the circuit noise and the shot noise, have been discussed extensively in the past1 and form the basis for the ultimate system performance. We show that the reflection feedback, invariably occurring in a fiber link without an isolator, can induce additional noise in the received power that manifests as a significant penalty in the receiver sensitivity.
