Abstract
We have developed spectroscopic techniques tor measuring lithium vapor number densities in iondiode experiments requiring simple-to-interpret diagnostic measurements of neutral lithium densities in the 1013–1017-cm−3 range. A lithium heat pipe oven which allowed the observation of lithium vapor from two perpendicular directions was used to develop optical methods of measuring these high neutral lithium densities. Laser-excited fluorescence spectroscopy using dipole-forbidden single-photon and two-photon transitions was investigated as a quantitative diagnostic for measuring the required lithium number densities. In particular, the oven was used to study the dipole-forbidden 2s2 S to 3d2D transition in lithium at 319.6 nm and the two-photon allowed transition between the same levels at a wavelength of 639.2 nm.
