Optimized four-channel Nd:glass laser system for compression experiments

Abstract

The laser system built at the Kaliski Institute of Plasma Physics & Laser Microfusion is a four-bearn Nd:glass laser used for the study of spherical compression of glass microballoons. The laser is capable of generating 160-J pulses of 0.2-TW peak power. This paper presents an overview of the system. A short laser pulse is cut out from the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser by an optically triggered spark-gap switch. Typical duration and energy of the short pulse are 1-1.5 nsec and 2 mJ, respectively. A contrast ratio of 107 is obtained by stimulated Brillouin scattering.
