Abstract
Sandwiching the flashlamp between two slabs (Fig. 1) reduces the reflector structure required for efficient pumping and leads to an increased geometric coupling efficiency between the flashlamps and slabs. However, the slab pumping Is now asymmetric with the slab side facing the lamps receiving more radiation than the side facing away from the lamps. The asymmetric pumping produces new thermooptical effects in zigzag slabs. Proper cooling environments should minimize these effects.
