Abstract
We have developed new cyanine dyes with pyrylium and thiapyrylium end groups. The absorption maximum depends on the length of the chain of alternating single and double bonds between the end groups. Even those dyes with as many as eleven carbon atoms in the chain have an excitation energy in agreement with the electron gas model, yet in disagreement with more sophisticated treatments.
