Abstract
Short-span high-bit-rate optical transmissions are expected to have huge application markets, e.g., local area networks (LANs) including video networks and optical interconnections in computer systems. For short-span applications, where high output power is not necessarily required, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are very attractive light sources, because they have the great advantages of stable operation in a wide temperature range, low cost, and outstanding reliability.
