Abstract

We report the first state-selective observation of neutral molecule desorption by electron impact The importance understanding the electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) of neutrals has been recognized for many years, but the inherent detection problem has severely limited the amount of published work.1,2 The use of laser resonance-ionization solves the detection problem and simultaneously enables us to probe the translational, vibrational, and rotational energies of the desorbed neutrals as a !unction of exciting-electron energy. Our initial results show that NO molecules desorbed from a Ni surface have kinetic and internal energies that reflect the physics of the desorption process rather than the temperature of the surface.
