Abstract

Garnet crystals with large lattice constants have proved to be suitable laser hosts for tunable 4-level Cr3+-laser applications. Large ions like Ga, Sc or Lu at the octahedral sites create a low crystal field strength for the Cr3+ ion, which then exhibits the broad 4T24A2 fluorescence.
