Abstract
A portable differential absorption lidar (DIAL) has been used to measure the concentration of methane in an operating underground coal mine. An Er:YAG laser-based system operating near 1.65µm has been used to establish the system sensitivity in actual mining conditions. In addition, an external cavity grating tuned diode laser source is being developed.1 Details and performance specifications will be discussed with emphasis on the industrial use of such a laser remote sensing device.
