Abstract
The demonstration of a visible chemical laser continues to be an elusive venture. The halogens and interhalogens are promising candidates, and several (I2,1 Br2,2 and IF3) have been lased in the visible region using optical excitation. There are chemical pumping schemes that might lead to a laser, but the kinetics of the excited states of the halogens need to be understood before an efficient laser can be designed.
