Abstract
In high-power lasers stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) together with phase conjugation can be used for amplifier decoupling and cancellation of static aberrations. In atomic iodine lasers (1.32 µm) only highly compressed gases with slow acoustic velocities resulting in frequency shifts of ≤ 1 GHz can be employed as Brillouin media since the amplification bandwidth of the iodine laser is rather small. Due to the short laser pulse duration of 1 nsec and the long phonon lifetime of ~100 nsec, the scattering process takes place entirely in the transient regime.
