Abstract

A CO2 Doppler lidar transceiver has been developed that will upgrade the current 1-W average power output of the NOAA pulsed Doppler CO2 lidar to 100 W. The upgrade was required to extend the range and altitude ceiling of the lidar for wind sensing to the upper troposphere and stratosphere. Line tunability and computer-controlled line switching are incorporated that also enable the device to be used for range-resolved water vapor measurements using the differential absorption technique and investigation of the wavelength dependence of the atmospheric backscatter coefficient in the 9–11-μm region.
