Abstract

The development of optical recording devices is reaching maturity. Device introduction to the data processing and documentation market is imminent. However, at this juncture, satisfactory archival optical recording media suited for mass production, and proven to meet the stability, sensitivity, and other requirements have yet to be identified. This disparity between the device technology and media development is of major concern. To insure that a medium is suited for its intended application a trade-off analysis is required. This panel discussion provides a forum to address this subject, with a view to reach a consensus on the general ground rules for the selection of recording media for each major application. It is hoped that this may serve as a basis for further media standards discussion.
