Abstract

The struggle to produce coherent sources in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and x-ray region has been continuing for more than 10 years. During that time numerous proposals have been made describing methods to generate EUV and x-ray lasers. Some proposals have reached the experimental stage. Already claims of success have been announced or otherwise leaked to the public. So far these claims of success have not been supported with sufficient data to satisfy the cautious observer. Other experiments have been making steady progress toward their goals.
