Nonlinear optical signal processing using integrated optics

Abstract

Optical signal processing can be implemented by the nonlinear mixing of optical waveforms in planar integrated optics waveguides. For example, we have previously1 demonstrated the convolution of optical waveforms of picosecond duration via second-order nonlinearities in LiNbO3 waveguides. Here we report (1) the application of this effect to a transient digitizer with picosecond resolution, and (2) the application of third-order nonlinearities in distributed feedback gratings to signal processing. The three interaction geometries are illustrated in Figs. 1-3.
