Theoretical treatment of multiple photon excitation in SF6

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Recent spectroscopic work on the 3v3 band of SF6 has yielded two fundamental results important to our understanding of multiple photon absorption in SF6:(1) vibrational splittings are large and dominie the multiple photon spectrum at low temperature; (2) the molecular quasi-continuum lies above the 3v3 level in energy. The new picture of the discrete levels shows that multiple photon resonances persist up to at most ~10 photons within the v3 ladder, indicating that the molecular quasi-continuum is not needed to explain multiple photon absorption until high levels in the molecule are attained.
