Circular aperture arrays for the calibration of droplet sizing instruments

Abstract

For many years the near-forward light-scattering signature from ensembles of droplets has been used to estimate parameters of the droplet-size distribution. A typical optical system for this purpose is shown in Fig. 1. Early workers1,2 used rather qualitative parameters of the forward-scattering pattern to determine a volume-to-surface area mean diameter of the distribution, the Sauter mean (SMD). More recently inversion methods are being used which permit reconstruction of the size distribution from forward-scattering measurements.3,4
