Abstract

Alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr3+) is a broadly tunable solid-state laser material with an RT emission cross section at 750 nm of 7 × 10−21 cm2,1 some 100 times smaller than that of YAG:Nd3+ and 4 times smaller than that of ruby (Al2O3:Cr3+). The lower emission cross section of alexandrite has generally limited the peak power available from Q-switched pulses.
