Physical origins of the optical nonlinearities of materials: an overview

Abstract

Key considerations in the search for new nonlinear optical crystals for UV applications and in the determination of the physical origins of the nonlinear refractive indices of laser glasses and organic liquids using femtosecond interferometry are reviewed.
