Abstract

The potential advantages of integrated optical circuits for information processing have been recognized for sometime. Although a monolithic optical circuit is yet to be realized, some significant advances in the performance of individual components and hybrid integration of these components have been made recently. Meanwhile research and development activities on the use of such hybrid optical circuits or modules in information processing have increased considerably.
