Abstract
The potential of laser-Doppler anemometry (LDA) for measuring velocity fluctuations in geophysical flows has long been recognized. The technique is noninterfering, requires no calibration, and provides a linear voltage-velocity relationship over virtually any velocity range. Although highly perfected as a laboratory tool, LDA has proved difficult to master in field work, particularly few measurements underwater.
