Abstract

Production of long lengths of fibers with high strength is crucial to the economically successful application of long distance optical communication systems. Although long lengths of very high- strength fiber have been produced in laboratory atmosphere,1,2 the routine production of high-strength fibers in a production environment remains a challenge. Factors affecting fiber strength are well understood.2,3 However, in large scale production many processing and materials parameters can go out of control and affect fiber strength. A quick identification of such out of control parameters is helpful in correcting the problem and obtaining high-strength fibers. In this paper we report on the fractographic analysis of the proof test breaks, the identification of the causes of these breaks, and the recommendations for eliminating them.
