Abstract

Investigations of optically pumped molecular lasers using tow pumping powers have been limited so far to pure rotational transitions in the FIR region (>30-µm wavelength). This type of laser will often operate cw with typical pumping powers ranging from 1 to 20 W. However, molecular lasers emitting on vibrational transitions in the mid-IR (11-30-µm wavelength) have only been pumped on a pulsed basis using TE lasers with pumping powers in the multikilowatts range. We report the first study of 12-µm lasing in NH3 using CO2 pump pulses as low as 2-W peak power.
