Abstract
Rare gas halide (RGH) lasers, used in conjunction with dye lasers, are capable of producing narrowband tunable coherent radiation throughout the wavelength range from ~30 to 100 nm through optical frequency conversion. To reach the short-wavelength end of this range it is necessary to use fifth-and seventh-order conversion processes. To date, however, only third-order processes have been reported with the RGH lasers. In this paper we report the first observation of higher-order harmonic processes using radiation from a RGH laser. Fifth harmonic conversion of radiation from a XeCl laser was observed in Ar, producing radiation at 61.6 nm.
