Abstract

Of the large number of solid state laser materials which have been developed, only a few have provided practical cw pumped sources. High cross section, long lifetime, four-level operation, and good pumping efficiency, the spectroscopic properties of the host-ion systems must be complemented by good host thermal and mechanical properties. This paper describes the first report of cw pumped laser operation in Nd:YLF which exhibits a threshold considerably lower than in Nd:YAG under nearly identical conditions.
