Divalent transition-metal solid-state lasers

Abstract

Recent efforts on lasers using divalent-transition-metal-doped crystals such as Ni:MgF2, Co:MgF2, V:MgF2, and Ni:MgO show that these devices can provide stable tunable diffraction-limited outputs at wavelengths ranging from 1.1 µm for V:MgF2 to 2.1 µm for Co:MgF2. Continuous wave repetitively Q-switched, mode-locked, and single-frequency modes of operation have all been obtained.1 In all cases the crystals are optically pumped by another laser, typically Nd:YAG, and are conduction-cooled to cryogenic temperatures.
