Abstract

One-dimensional models of the free-electron laser (PEL) lead one to believe that high-power high-efficiency lasers might be built.1,2 Two-dimensional effects such as refraction, diffraction, and nonuniform transverse wiggler fields can substantially alter the 1-D predictions.
