Abstract

Since the development of low-loss optical fiber, some investigations of optical devices (high-speed modulator/switch, isolator, wavelength meter) using various crystals have been reported.1-4 In the past, we constructed a quarter-wavelength plate independent of the wavelength utilizing the electrooptic effect of a LiNbO3 crystal and applied it to measuring the polarization characteristics of an optical fiber.5 in this paper, a 2 × 2 transverse-type optical switch using a LiNbO3 crystal is reported, and an optical wavelength meter and an optical demultiplexer are proposed as examples of the applications of this optical switch.
