Overview of high energy laser device technology for military applications

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The demonstration of the first carbon dioxide 10.6-μm gasdynamic laser (GDL) in 1966 is regarded by most as the beginning of the high energy laser era. Since that time DOD has provided the lion's share of R&D funding for a wide spectrum of high energy laser devices and associated technologies. The motivation for this support is the potential military application of a high energy laser as a directed energy weapon.
