Depolarization Effect of Graded-index Plastic Optical Fiber with Strong Mode Mixing

Abstract

We demonstrate that propagating light through graded-index plastic optical fibers is significantly depolarized by intrinsic mode mixing because of microscopic core heterogeneities. This depolarization effect allows for stable optical link through reduction of interference-induced noises.
