Abstract

A heavily-erbium-doped fiber laser at 3.42 μm achieving a record slope efficiency of 38.6 % is reported. Power-scaling perspectives of 3.5 μm fiber lasers and novel phenomena occurring in heavily-doped fibers are also investigated.
